When designing with furniture, spaces must be created between each piece that allow the 3-D character (3-D in that furniture is made with at least 3 finished sides) of each piece to be appreciated. These spaces are most important as they allow the design theme of the adjacent room to continue uninterrupted into the kitchen. The spaces allow the wall, ceiling and floor coverings (the architectural finishes) to instantly meld the kitchen and family room into one homogeneous space in a way that is impossible to do with horizontally designed cabinetry. The spaces define the room's personality and allow the furniture to become more eclectic as well, emulating the same design techniques used in the design of the family room. No longer must the kitchen have just one color of wood, or one door style or one countertop material. The spaces allow all of these elements to change more readily. For a clear example, think of an open-plan log home where all the interior walls are exposed logs. A furnished kitchen allows the logs to be seen between each piece, which helps to unify the open-plan room whereas a horizontally designed cabinetry filled kitchen covers up all the logs. In an open-plan loft design where the kitchen is always seen, a furnished kitchen can blend seamlessly into the other casual seating groupings by allowing all the architectural finishes to meander between all the pieces and hold everything together.

Basic Layouts of a Kitchen. The efficient kitchen has adequate storage, ample counter space and is arranged to save the home-maker unnecessary steps. While the size and location of the kitchen often determines the layout, you can generally make modifications to produce more efficiency. The layout of the kitchen is determined by the arrangement of the appliances and cabinets within the room. All the units can be set against one wall, or two walls or three. Here are four different layouts commonly found in homes: The single wall with the sink in the center and the range and refrigerator on either end with cabinets in between and overhead. The two-wall kitchen where appliances and cabinets are placed on two opposite walls in the room. The L-shaped kitchen where appliances and cabinets are placed on two adjacent walls. The U-shaped kitchen where three walls are used for the necessary equipment of the kitchen.

Of course, in dealing with all of these design and construction issues and decisions that need to be made, you will not be alone. Your designer will be the pivotal person who will help you evaluate the choices you have available. He or she will produce drawings in order to visually demonstrate these options and will offer advice on which options are best and why. I understand that this all sounds very tedious and problematic. In some sense these two words are a good description of the design/construction process. However, what I have outlined above is done thousands of times every day and most of those homeowners have survived and, as a result, now have the new, beautiful, functional, kitchen of their dreams. You notice I said "most"! Seriously, the project will be challenging and there will be some problems. This is just the nature of design and construction and that is why you should not proceed without experienced professional help throughout the process from the very beginning to the end. UTILIZING YOUR KITCHEN. Are you an expert chef, who does it all: cooking, baking, barbecuing, or are you a minimal cook whose main goal is to just get a meal on the table for the family as expeditiously as possible, or are you somewhere in between? Do you always cook by yourself or do you often have family and friends help with the cooking? Do you often entertain and all flow into the kitchen while munching on your Brie between sips of chardonnay? Do you bake often and want a marble surface for that purpose? The questions can go on and on.

He or she will submit design drawings and calculations of the solution, to the building authority for approval and permit. Upon receiving the permit, when you are ready to begin construction, the contractor can then proceed to build-out the structure per the engineer's or architect's specifications. This is the process in California, based upon the state building standards, Title 24. The process in the other states is very similar. VERTICAL SPACE. You should also consider what size and shape the room will be from a vertical standpoint as well. If it is possible to increase the height of the room by raising, eliminating or altering an existing low ceiling or soffit, you should seriously consider taking advantage of this option. Natural wooden kitchens - These kitchens are made from solid wood and not particle board. Many of the "assembly-required" are made from laminated particle board and are still considered wood by the manufacturer. The natural wooden kitchens are typically made from spruce, pine or cedar. Many of these designs are more abstract in nature. That is they do not offer realistic detail; however, there is no mistaking that these are play kitchens. They usually combine a sink and stove and have moving parts. It is just that the details are left to the child's imagination. Is my child old enough? In a word, yes. Well, let's qualify that. Some kitchens also have small parts that may come off and pose a choking hazard for a younger child, so your child should be at least three years old. With a small child it is tempting to get a very small kitchen play set. However, a busy preschooler can quickly out grow the small toy kitchen. On the other hand, if you get a large play kitchen, it might overwhelm a younger toddler. You have to know your child, but you want to plan for growth. A smaller child may not be able to reach the upper appliances on a large single unit play kitchen. On other units, the stove top or counter height may be too tall for the child to effectively play with the toy kitchen unit. Your choices are three-fold: buy a smaller kids kitchen and patiently wait until your child grows taller. Or, get a little step stool or bench, just like the one you use in their bathroom, to help the child reach everywhere in their kitchen.
